The first banks in the Romanian lands — and the birth of the BNR
Until late, Romanians kept their money in the dowry chest. How the first modern banks appeared and why the founding of the National Bank, in 1880, changed everything.

For a long time, there were no modern banks in the Romanian lands. Those who needed money borrowed from money changers and usurers, often at huge interest. Money was kept at home, in the dowry chest, exposed to theft and fire.
1880 — the National Bank
In 1880, just a few years after independence, the National Bank of Romania was founded. It received the right to issue the national currency, the leu, and brought order: a single trusted currency, clear rules, an institution watching over the country's money.
