Crypto mining means using powerful computers to solve mathematical problems that confirm the network's transactions. Whoever succeeds receives, as a reward, new coins.

Digital gold, real cost

Like extracting gold from the ground, mining requires effort and resources — here, a lot of electricity. Hence the criticism about consumption. Scarcity "through effort" is the digital version of gold mines.
