Bernie Madoff, respected on Wall Street, secretly ran a huge Ponzi scheme. For decades he deceived thousands of people and institutions, "reporting" steady returns that didn't exist.

Trust as a weapon

His very reputation enabled the fraud: people trusted and didn't check. It collapsed in the 2008 crisis, when too many asked for their money back. The harshest lesson: verify, even those who seem "trustworthy".
