The South African Krugerrand was the first modern bullion coin: it held exactly one ounce of gold and was designed not for spending, but for investing in gold easily and safely.

Gold for everyone

The idea caught on: the Canadian Maple Leaf, American Eagle, Vienna Philharmonic followed. Today anyone can buy an ounce of physical gold. The Krugerrand democratized something that had always been the privilege of the wealthy.
